Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, was born within Long Beach California. As a child DuVernay's Aunt Denise was a great influence on her enthusiasm for the arts and her creative side. DuVernay worked as a night nurse to allow her aunt to have the time she needed in her day to indulge in the arts, literature and theater. She showed DuVernay the 1961 movie West Side Story and DuVernay was captivated by it. DuVernay was taught by her that art could be a vehicle for activism. DuVernay was trained by her mother who was social conscience and advised DuVernay to express herself through art. While DuVernay was raised in Compton with her parents, she always spent summers living in Lowndes County Alabama where her parents lived for many generations. Her father, who was DuVernay's dad, reminisced famous civil rights protest on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the close-by town of Selma Alabama. The time spent in Selma, Alabama during the summers that DuVernay was would later inspire her to make a film that focused on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay received her graduation certificate of Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. She enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles to earn degrees in English along with African American Studies. DuVernay began to produce in broadcast journalism when she was in her school. DuVernay began as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being commissioned to sit at the home of one of the members of the jury. She was also asked to take a look at their trash. In the aftermath of being dissatisfied in journalism and the jobs she was handed, DuVernay was inspired to start a new career as a publicist. DuVernay was hired right after college, as an intern at one of the smaller studios. In 1999, she founded her own business of public relations, called The DuVernay Agency. Alongside PR, her agency also established a range of lifestyle and promotional networks including Urban Beauty Collective, the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
